Buying a Steel Staircase
Where can I buy a steel staircase?
Vague question really but the reality is that a standard staircase can be bought from numerous outlets online but are often not regulation compliant, nor likely to fit. The reality is therefore that you will require a made-to-measure staircase to fit your specific application and meet the building regulations that apply.
How can I get a made-to-measure staircase?
Contact an architectural steel fabrication company for a quotation. Here at DioMet, we design, manufacture, deliver and install steel staircases all over the UK on a regular basis. Simply supply us with any drawings, dimensions, descriptions or photographs you have and we shall assist you with a competitive quotation for a staircase that meets your needs. For a quotation, see our standard online staircase pricing tool or contact us for assistance.
How can I ensure my metal staircase is building regulation compliant?
Basically all structural steel products, such as a metal staircase, must conform to the most recent building regulations under BS EN1090-1 and come with a declaration of performance. This means your fabrication company must be CE marked to the above standard otherwise you are buying an illegal and potentially dangerous product.
Is there anything else to know?
1) You must ensure that any planning conditions are met for your building- contact your local building control for clarification.
2) You need to factor in the fabrication time on a bespoke staircase. The process of design and manufacture will generally take 3-4 weeks and then additional time for any special finishes or painting services.
3) The finish of the steel staircase will vary depending on it’s application. For external use, we recommend galvanized finish as a minimum for low-maintainance and long lasting rust-protection. Internal stairs can be powdercoated or gloss painted.
4) Installation is relatively simple for any competent tradesman and all DioMet’s staircases are supplied in kit form with all assembly fixings. For larger or more complicated stairs, leave it to the professionals and get an installation quote.
