Why not just use a wood screw

These are the right size to fix a glass clamp directly to timber or masonry. A standard wood screw is too small for the slot in the back of the clamp — the head does not bear properly, which leaves the clamp able to move and puts the load in the wrong place.

It is a small part that people commonly get wrong, so it is worth ordering the right ones with the clamps.

Fixing to a steel post instead?

You want our M8 glass clamp fixing screw, which is made to bolt clamps to steel rather than screw into timber.
