Bespoke Oak Office Desk & Floating Shelves — Stannington, Sheffield

Dio-Met designed, made and installed a bespoke home-office setup for Angela in Stannington, Sheffield: a full-length solid oak desk and a set of solid oak floating shelves, all carried on powder-coated black steelwork. The brief was a clean, modern garden-office workspace with a huge uninterrupted desk and shelving that looked light but was genuinely solid.

Project overview

  • Client: Angela (residential)
  • Location: Stannington, Sheffield
  • Desk: Circa 2.5m run of 30mm solid oak, supported on a steel angle under the back edge so the whole span is clear with no legs in the way
  • Shelves: 30mm solid oak floating shelves, each a full L-shaped piece bonded solid, fixed on hidden wall fixings and a fabricated steel pole at one end
  • Storage: Black steel pedestal drawer unit
  • Metalwork: Powder-coated black
  • Scope: Supply and installation
  • Made: In our Sheffield workshop

The brief

Angela wanted a proper working desk for a garden office, not a flat-pack compromise: a long oak worktop running the width of the room with nothing underneath to knock your knees on, plus open shelving for books and bits that felt part of the room. The catch with both is rigidity. A 2.5m desk with no legs and "floating" shelves that actually hold a full bookcase of weight are not trivial, which is exactly why a metal fabricator was the right maker.

Design and fabrication

The desk top is a single run of 30mm solid oak, around 2.5m long. Rather than legs, it sits on a steel angle fixed along the back edge, which carries the load back to the wall and leaves the entire underside clear: one big, usable area with no interruptions. A black steel pedestal drawer unit tucks underneath for storage.

The shelves are where the engineering really shows. Instead of the usual floppy floating shelf, each one is a full L-shaped piece of 30mm solid oak, bonded together solid, then held on concealed fixings into the wall with a fabricated steel pole carrying the outer end. The result is genuinely sturdy, no sag, no bounce, even loaded with books. The shelves are graduated for looks as well as function: they get longer as they descend, and narrower as they get longer, which gives the run its tapered, balanced look. All the steelwork, the desk support, the pole and the drawers, is powder-coated black to set off the natural oak.

Expert insight

"A floating shelf that holds a full row of books without sagging is a steel problem dressed up as a carpentry one. Because we fabricate the support and bond the oak ourselves, we can make shelves and desks that look light but don't move."

Frequently asked questions

How do you support a long desk with no legs? With steel. Here a steel angle runs along the back edge of the oak top and carries the load back to the wall, so a 2.5m desk stays rigid with the whole area underneath kept clear.

Why are your floating shelves sturdier than normal ones? Most floating shelves are a thin veneer over a bracket and flex under load. Ours are full solid oak, bonded solid, on concealed fixings plus a fabricated steel support, so they hold real weight without sagging.

Do you make bespoke furniture as well as architectural metalwork? Yes. Alongside balconies, balustrades and staircases we take on one-off pieces like desks and shelving, designed, fabricated and finished in-house.

Can it be made to fit my room exactly? Yes. We work to your dimensions and agree the layout, shelf sizes, storage and finish before anything is made, so it fits the space precisely.

Do you cover Sheffield and beyond? Yes. This project is in Stannington, Sheffield, close to our workshop, but we supply and install bespoke pieces across the UK.
