The Development: Hallam Mews, Ranmoor
Hallam Mews is a crescent of five detached and two semi-detached stone built homes constructed by Domis Construction in Ranmoor, Sheffield. Built with traditional ashlar stone detailing and natural slate roofs, the development sits at the premium end of the Sheffield residential market. The properties are contemporary in layout and specification while referencing the traditional materials and character of the surrounding area.
The brief for the door canopies was to provide weather protection at each front entrance without introducing anything that felt at odds with the stone and dark metal palette of the development. A heavy ornate canopy would have looked wrong. A minimal frameless glass system with stainless steel brackets was the right call — substantial enough to be noticed, restrained enough not to compete with the architecture around it.
The Canopy System: T1 with Concealed Fixings
The canopy specified across all five properties is our T1 Modern and Contemporary Glass Door Canopy — a wall-fixed system using stainless steel angled tie brackets projecting from the wall face to support the glass panel above.
At 2200mm wide by 800mm projection, these are substantial canopies providing genuine weather protection across the full width of each entrance. The frosted glass was specified rather than clear for two reasons: it provides a degree of privacy to the entrance lobby beyond, and its white diffused appearance complements the light ashlar stonework of the facades more naturally than clear glass would have done.
The fixing brackets use a unique design with concealed fixings set behind a stainless steel cover plate. From the front, the connection between bracket and wall appears as a clean polished face with no visible bolt heads or raw fixings. On a development of this quality, that level of finish detail matters.
Technical Insight
Supplying five identical canopies to a new build development sounds straightforward — but new builds are rarely as dimensionally consistent as the drawings suggest. Stone courses vary slightly between plots, opening widths differ marginally, and the fixing centres that work perfectly on plot one sometimes need minor adjustment by plot five. Our approach on multi-unit developments is to survey each plot individually rather than assume the first installation sets the template for all. On Hallam Mews this meant five separate fixing surveys, which adds time to the programme but eliminates the risk of a canopy arriving on site that does not fit cleanly to the stonework. On a development of this calibre, a misaligned canopy bracket is not acceptable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you supply glass door canopies for new build developments? Yes. We work regularly with developers and main contractors on new build schemes, supplying canopies across multiple plots to a consistent specification. We can provide a single canopy for a one-off residential project or supply and install across an entire development. Contact us to discuss quantity and programme requirements.
What is the difference between frosted and clear glass on a door canopy? Frosted glass diffuses light rather than transmitting it clearly, giving the canopy a white opaque appearance from outside. It suits properties where a degree of entrance privacy is desired, and tends to complement lighter stone or render facades more naturally than clear glass. Clear glass is available on all our canopy systems and suits more contemporary or darker material palettes. Both specifications use toughened safety glass.
What size canopies can Dio-Met supply? Our standard T1 canopy range covers a wide range of widths and projections. The canopies at Hallam Mews were approximately 2200mm wide by 800mm projection. We also manufacture bespoke sizes outside the standard range to suit non-standard openings. Contact us with your dimensions for a quotation.
How are the canopy brackets fixed to a stone building? The stainless steel angled tie brackets are fixed directly into the masonry using chemically anchored resin fixings. On stonework, we select fixing positions to hit solid stone rather than mortar joints, and specify fixing sizes and depths to suit the structural pull-out requirements. Cover plates are then fitted over the wall connection points to conceal the fixing detail.
Do glass door canopies require planning permission? In most cases a domestic glass door canopy falls within permitted development rights and does not require planning permission, provided it does not project excessively beyond the building line. On conservation areas or listed buildings the position may differ. We recommend checking with your local planning authority if you are unsure. For new build developments, canopies are typically included within the overall planning approval.
