The Retrofit Challenge: Bridging the Gap Between Square and Round Many underground wine cellars—particularly those with pre-cast concrete liners—feature a rectangular floor opening that transitions into a spiral or semi-circular staircase. Traditional wooden doors are often bulky, difficult to open, and hide the cellar’s character.
Matt’s project was the perfect candidate for a retrofit glass hatch. By using a rectangular frame, we maximized the structural support on the existing floor joists while using a specialized aesthetic treatment on the glass to maintain the "circular" feel of the cellar below.
Technical Expert Insight: Solving the "Concrete Void" Aesthetic
The most frequent issue when replacing a wooden door with a glass hatch is the visibility of the concrete substrate or "raw" opening edges.] Unlike a new-build where everything is flush, a renovation often reveals untidy masonry. To solve this, we don't just supply a clear piece of glass; we utilize back-painted internal borders. By applying a ceramic frit to the underside of the glass in a semi-circular pattern, we create a "mask" that hides the rectangular concrete corners while framing the circular staircase perfectly. Furthermore, since these concrete cellars can be damp, we ensure all hinges and gas struts are positioned to avoid moisture-trap points, ensuring a smooth "Open-Sesame" operation that lasts for decades without the maintenance required by timber.
