• Bespoke Internal & External Glass Hatch Systems – Chiswick, London

The Project: Architectural Glazing for a Submerged Living Room

This project for our client, Graham, in Chiswick, involved some of our most technical engineering to date. The property features a stunning architectural design where an outdoor pond flows directly under the house and into the living room. Dio-Met was commissioned to provide a suite of custom metalwork and glass solutions to provide access, safety, and a unique view of the aquatic life below.

The Solution: Custom Engineering & Waterproof Automation

Because of the proximity to water and the unique "indoor-outdoor" nature of the pond, every component required bespoke waterproofing and specialized shroud systems.

  • Internal Electric Glass Floor: Located in the center of the living room, this large-scale glass floor allows the client to view the fish swimming beneath the house. We designed a custom electric hinged system with a specialized shroud to waterproof the actuators, ensuring long-term reliability in a high-moisture environment. This hatch opens from one side only for seamless access.

  • External Glass Pond Feeding Hatch: We supplied a specific walk-on glass hatch located over the external section of the pond, designed specifically as a feeding station that maintains the sleek look of the terrace.

  • Large Decked Maintenance Hatch: To hide necessary pond filtration and pump equipment, we manufactured a large-framed hatch designed to be clad in decking, providing easy access for maintenance while remaining flush with the floor.

  • Internal Glass Balustrades: To complete the interior renovation, we supplied and installed custom glass balustrades for the main staircase, maintaining the open, light-filled aesthetic of the home.

The Result: A Truly Unique Living Space

The integration of the motorized glass floor within the living room transforms the house into a living gallery. This project is a testament to Dio-Met’s ability to solve complex architectural challenges, from waterproofing mechanical actuators to providing millimeter-perfect installations in high-end London residences.
