Glass Balustrade Project: Frameless Patio Fence in Chesterfield

Dio-Met recently completed a stunning glass balustrade installation for our client, April, in Chesterfield. This project is a prime example of how minimalist design can transform an elevated outdoor space into a safe, open, and visually striking area without obscuring garden views.

The Design: Transparency Meets Strength

The Chesterfield project utilized high-quality toughened safety glass panels with our System 7 Frameless Balustrade, designed to provide a secure barrier while acting as a transparent canvas for the surrounding landscape. Key features of this installation include:

• Resin-Anchored Side Mounting: The stainless steel clamps were face-fixed to the existing brickwork using high-strength chemical resin anchors for maximum security.

• Structural Capping Rail: A sleek stainless steel handrail was added, which does more than just provide a grip—it ties every glass panel together into a single, rigid unit.

• Bespoke Survey: Our Sheffield-based team conducted a full site survey to ensure every panel was millimetre-perfect for the patio's specific dimensions.

Technical Expert Insight

When face-fixing balustrades to traditional brickwork, we move away from standard mechanical bolts which can stress the masonry. For this Chesterfield project, we used chemical resin anchors. By injecting resin into the drill hole, the fixings bond to the brick and mortar internally, distributing the 'pull-out' load across a larger surface area and preventing the bricks from cracking. Furthermore, by using a continuous stainless steel handrail to tie all the sections together, we significantly increased the system's rigidity. The handrail ensures that the panels work in unison; if one panel is leaned on, the load is shared across the entire run of the balustrade, effectively eliminating panel 'chatter' and wobble.
