    Maximizing Space with a Two-Tiered Balcony System Stephanie’s home required a solution that maximized a significant change in elevation between the first-floor living area and the garden. Our design team engineered a structural steel "bridge" that functions as a large landing area while providing the framework for the stairs leading down to the secondary deck.

    • Unified Aesthetics: We utilized anthracite grey composite decking across both levels and the stair treads to create a continuous visual flow that requires virtually zero maintenance.

    • Functional Customization: At Stephanie's request, the corner baluster posts on the upper deck were elongated to serve as integrated washing line supports—proving that high-end design can still accommodate everyday household needs.

    • Artistic Privacy: On the lower level, traditional railings were replaced with two light-green, laser-cut steel screens. These "Tree Silhouette" panels provide a creative focal point while offering a degree of seclusion for the shaded lower patio.

    Technical Expert Insight: Engineering Stairs for Walkout Balconies

    When designing a balcony with stairs to a garden, the staircase geometry is the most critical safety factor. For Stephanie’s project, we had to ensure the "rise and going" of the steps met strict UK Building Regulations while maintaining a compact footprint that didn't eat up the lower garden space. At Dio-Met, we utilize a stringer system manufactured from heavy-duty structural steel rather than timber. This ensures that the stairs remain rock-solid and do not "bounce" or warp, which is a common issue with wood-framed alternatives. Because this was a supply-only kit, we precision-engineered every bolt hole in our Sheffield workshop. This allowed Stephanie’s husband—a competent DIYer—to assemble the entire two-story structure with perfect alignment, ensuring the final installation was fully UKCA certified and structurally sound for the long term.
