Turning a Subterranean Discovery into a Kitchen Feature When Kevin uncovered the 17ft deep well during a kitchen renovation, he faced the common dilemma: fill it in or find a way to make it safe. Working with Dio-Met, the family chose to build the well walls up to floor level and seal them with a reinforced glass cover.

  • Walk-on Structural Integrity: The glass is engineered to handle the high foot traffic of a domestic kitchen. It is not just a "window"; it is a load-bearing structural component that forms part of the floor.

  • Preserving the View: High-clarity glass ensures that the internal brickwork and the water at the base of the well remain clearly visible, enhanced by internal LED lighting (installed by the client).

  • Bespoke Framing: Every well we encounter is a different diameter. This project required a custom-fabricated steel frame to seat the glass perfectly flush with the new kitchen tiles.

Technical Expert Insight: Managing Condensation in Covered Wells

One of the most significant technical challenges when covering a 17ft deep water well with glass is condensation management. Because the well contains water and the kitchen is heated, the temperature differential can cause moisture to fog the underside of the glass, obscuring the view. At Dio-Met, we consult on the importance of "breather" systems or passive ventilation within the well-lining. For Kevin's project, the glass was seated with specialized EPDM gaskets that provide a safe cushion while allowing the structural frame to handle the thermal expansion. When discovering a well, it is vital to ensure the brickwork is built up to a perfectly level "shelf" to receive our steel frame; this ensures the glass sits flush and prevents trip hazards in a busy family kitchen.
