Glass Well Covers (Made to Measure)

Walk-on glass covers for wells, light-wells, old well heads and feature openings, made to the exact diameter you need. Every cover is toughened and laminated safety glass, supplied on its own or with a steel support frame as required. 

Glass thicknesses

All covers are toughened and laminated, made to measure, in three thicknesses:

• 25.5mm: two 12mm toughened panels
• 31.5mm: two 15mm toughened panels
• 33mm: three 10mm toughened panels (double laminate)

As a guide for domestic use, 25.5mm suits openings up to about 1000mm, with 31.5mm or 33mm for larger sizes up to around 1500mm. See the loadings below, and check with a structural glass engineer if in doubt.

Border options

• Back-painted border (recommended): a black painted border, 50mm or 100mm wide as standard (other widths on request), which hides the underside edge and any silicone or adhesive used to fix the glass.
• Frosted border: a sandblasted border, 50mm or 100mm wide. It stays slightly translucent, so we usually recommend the painted border for full concealment.

Non-slip coating

Our optional non-slip coating is invisible to the eye and makes the glass slip resistant, typically lasting around five years. It reaches a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) of 68, well above the 36 needed to rate as low slip risk in the dry. It also helps on wet glass, though take normal care when wet.

Ritec anti-condensation coating

Applied to the underside, Ritec ClearShield helps condensation run off and discourages mould. It reduces rather than removes condensation, so for damp wells we would also suggest tackling the cause with a vent or air pump.

Steel frame options

A steel frame gives a solid mounting for the cover and a clean edge to pave or floor up to. Frames come with seating rubbers to buffer the glass, and optional silicone sealing (frames A and B). See the frame designs PDF.

• Frame A: surrounds the glass and sits over the well opening, allowing tiling or flooring up to a flush, floor-level finish (add 100mm to your internal well diameter for online pricing)
• Frame B: drops into the opening, supported by the surrounding floor (may need a 5mm lip built in, or it stands slightly proud, a minor trip point in some spots; use exact internal diameter for pricing)
• Frame C: bolts inside the well opening, with adjustable height before fixing (use exact internal diameter for pricing)
• No frame: glass only, enter your exact glass diameter for pricing

Frames are powder-coated for internal, dry use, and galvanised and powder-coated for external or damp internal use.

Certifications and loading

Steel frameworks are fully structurally rated and UKCA marked to BS EN 1090-2, a legal requirement many suppliers skip. The glass is designed to the domestic (Category A) floor loadings in the UK National Annex to BS EN 1991-1-1:2002:

• Uniform distributed load: 1.5kN/sqm
• Concentrated load: 2.0kN
