External Steel Staircase Replacement, Anthracite Grey — Meadowhead, Sheffield

Dio-Met surveyed, designed, manufactured and installed a new external steel staircase and metal railings for a home in Meadowhead, Sheffield, in place of an old masonry staircase up the side of the property. The client arranged removal of the old masonry stair himself, and we supplied and fitted the new steelwork. The new stair is galvanised and powder-coated in anthracite grey (RAL 7016), with a square-bar metal balustrade and a custom-sized and shaped landing to suit the space between the house and the boundary wall. The treads and landing were supplied as open 'pan' trays, ready for the client to infill with his own choice of decking.

The brief

The existing staircase up the side of the house was an old masonry structure that had reached the end of its life. The client arranged for the old masonry stair to be removed, and Dio-Met supplied and installed the new steel staircase and metal railings in its place. The space is tight, running between the house wall and the boundary, and there is a fair height to climb, so the new staircase had to be surveyed carefully and designed with a custom-sized and shaped landing to fit the space and the levels.

Design and fabrication

Dio-Met surveyed the site, produced the design and structural drawings in-house, and manufactured the staircase in our Sheffield workshops. It is a properly engineered steel stair: 240 x 10mm stringers with a 150 x 75 supporting channel, 10mm plates and 4.5mm pressed-steel treads on angle cleats, fabricated to BS EN 1090-2 execution class EXC2 in S275 steel. The treads and the custom landing were supplied as open 'pan' trays, so the client could infill them with his own choice of decking to finish the surface exactly as he wanted. The matching balustrade uses 40 x 40mm box-section posts, a 50 x 8mm flat handrail and a 12mm square-bar infill, for a clean, traditional look that suits the property.

Galvanised and powder-coated steel external staircase between brick walls, Sheffield
The new steel staircase between the house and boundary wall

Being outdoors, the whole staircase was hot-dip galvanised and then powder-coated in anthracite grey (RAL 7016), so it shrugs off the weather for decades with almost no upkeep and looks smart against the brickwork.

Installation

Our own fitters installed the staircase on site, working to the levels set at survey, with the base fixing plates set below finished floor level for a solid, tidy footing. Handling the survey, fabrication and fit ourselves keeps the whole job under our control and means the stair drops in and lines up first time.

Expert insight

"A tight, tall external stair between two walls is all about the survey and the setting-out. Get the flights and the custom landing right on the drawing, build it to EXC2, galvanise and powder-coat it, and you have a stair that is safe, compliant and there for the long haul."

Frequently asked questions

Do you replace old external staircases? Yes. We design, manufacture and install the new steel staircase and railings to suit the space and levels. On this Meadowhead project the client removed the old masonry staircase, and we supplied and fitted the new galvanised steel one in its place.

Are your external steel staircases compliant? Yes. This staircase is fabricated to BS EN 1090-2, execution class EXC2, in S275 steel and UKCA marked, with the balustrade and going designed to the relevant building regulations. Our staircase building regulations guide sets out the requirements.

What finish lasts outdoors? For external stairs we hot-dip galvanise the steel and then powder-coat it, here in anthracite grey (RAL 7016). That gives decades of weather resistance with minimal maintenance, and any RAL colour is available.
