Dio-Met surveyed, designed, manufactured and installed a frameless glass balustrade around a raised patio terrace at a home in Wombwell, Barnsley. The terrace looks out over open countryside, so frameless glass was the obvious choice: it guards the edge safely while keeping the view completely clear. We used our frameless base-channel glass balustrade (System 4), run in two lengths around the patio.

The brief
The patio sits up above a garden that drops away to fields beyond, so the client wanted the edge guarded without losing that view. Anything with posts or a top rail would have cut across the outlook, so a frameless glass balustrade was the right answer, giving a safe, compliant edge that all but disappears against the countryside.
Design and installation
Dio-Met surveyed the terrace and set the balustrade out in two runs to suit the patio, then made and installed it. The glass sits in a 120 x 72mm aluminium base channel with a brushed, satin-polished finish, which does all the structural work and keeps the top edge completely clear, no posts and no handrail. The panels are 17.5mm toughened and laminated glass: the laminated make-up holds together even if a pane is ever damaged, which is what lets it meet the regulations without a top rail. The result is a clean, uninterrupted line of glass that keeps the outlook open right across the terrace. It is UKCA marked and building-regulation compliant.
