Glass Balustrade & Iroko Handrails, Landing and Garden Steps — Timperley, South Manchester

Dio-Met surveyed, designed, manufactured and installed a bespoke balustrade for a home in Timperley, South Manchester, using our System 5 balustrade: powder-coated steel and glass topped with a warm iroko timber handrail. Gema wanted one cohesive design across her raised terrace and the garden steps, so we used glass to the landing for an open view and adapted the design to steel bar-infill railings on the steps, with the iroko handrail carried through.

The brief

Gema wanted a stylish, safe balustrade that tied her raised terrace and her garden steps together and suited the house, which has a smart black-framed glass extension. The terrace called for something open that would not block the garden view, while the steps down needed a hard-wearing, practical guard. One family of parts, our System 5, covered both, so the whole run reads as a single design.

Design and installation

Dio-Met surveyed the property, took precise measurements and drew the balustrade up on AutoCAD for approval before making it. To the raised terrace we fitted the System 5 glass balustrade: powder-coated steel framing carrying 10mm toughened safety glass with polished edges and radius corners, for a clean, open edge that keeps the view. On the garden steps, at Gema's request, we adapted the same system to use steel bar-infill railings instead of glass, a tougher, more practical choice for an outdoor stair. A warm iroko timber handrail runs through both, tying the terrace and the steps together and setting off the black steelwork.

The steelwork was galvanised and then powder-coated so it stands up to the weather, and as structural guarding it is made to BS EN 1090 and UKCA marked, designed to the relevant building regulations.

Expert insight

"Using one system across a terrace and the steps is what keeps a job like this looking considered rather than piecemeal. Glass where you want the view, steel infill where you want toughness, and the same timber handrail through both to pull it together."

Frequently asked questions

Can you mix glass and metal infill on the same balustrade? Yes. On this Timperley project we used glass to the terrace for an open view and steel bar-infill railings on the garden steps, all from our System 5 range with one iroko handrail throughout, so it reads as a single design.

What is System 5? It is our powder-coated steel and glass balustrade topped with a solid iroko timber handrail. The System 5 product page has the full detail; here it was adapted with steel infill on the steps.

Are the balustrades building-regulation compliant? Yes. The steelwork is made to BS EN 1090 and UKCA marked, designed to the relevant guarding regulations. Our balustrade building regulations guide explains the requirements.

Do you cover Manchester and beyond? Yes. This project is in Timperley, South Manchester. We manufacture in Sheffield and install nationwide, supply-only or fully fitted.
