6mm clear toughened glass, cut to your sizes. This is our furniture and surface glass rather than an architectural one, and it is the thinnest panel we supply.
What 6mm is for
Coffee table tops, dressing table tops, sideboards and cabinets. Splashbacks. Small internal screens. In nearly every case it is sitting flat onto a timber surface, with the furniture underneath carrying the load and the glass protecting the top and finishing it.
Because it is handled rather than looked through, the edges matter more here than anywhere else in the range — every panel gets polished edges and a 5mm radius corner as standard.
Not for balustrades
Worth saying plainly, because this page sits in the clear toughened category alongside our balustrade thicknesses. 6mm is not a balustrade glass. If you are infilling a framed balustrade you want 10mm, and our glass balustrade regulations guide sets out where thicker or laminated is called for.
The other furniture thickness is 19mm. The difference is what the glass is standing on: 6mm sits flat on a timber surface, 19mm is thick enough to be self-supporting — a glass table top in its own right rather than a protective layer over one.
Splashbacks: clear over a colour, or painted glass?
Both routes work and they are priced differently, so it is worth knowing which you are asking for.
Clear 6mm over a painted or tiled wall is this product. One thing to know: standard glass carries a faint green cast from the iron in it, which over a white or pale surface can make the white read very slightly mint. On a dark or busy surface you would never notice. If the wall behind is pale and you want it true, ask us about low iron glass, which has most of the iron removed and is noticeably clearer side by side.
Or have the colour on the glass itself. Our backpainted kitchen splashback glass is 6mm toughened, painted on the back face to any RAL colour you choose, with a hard-wearing paint made for kitchens. It is low iron as standard, so the green question does not arise, and it gives an even colour with no grout lines. Most of our splashback work goes out this way.
Ordering and delivery
Every panel is made to your own dimensions, to the millimetre. We do not hold standard sizes and there is no stock list to pick from — put the length and height you need into the calculator and the price shown is for that exact panel, cut and toughened for your job.
Tell us about any holes, cut-outs, notches or radius corners at the same time. Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled once it has been through the furnace, so everything has to be done before it is toughened and nothing can be trimmed on site. For anything unusual use our bespoke toughened glass service.
Polished edges and a proper 5mm radius corner as standard on all four corners — not the dubbed corner, knocked off by hand, that a lot of suppliers will quote you. Details on our material and finish standards page. Manufactured to BS EN 12150, impact classified to BS EN 12600.
Nationwide delivery typically 3–4 weeks; check terms for excluded zones. Call 0114 243 9009 or email sales@diometonline.co.uk.
A note on specification
The guidance on this page reflects what we typically supply for jobs of this kind, and is offered in good faith to help you order the right thing. It is not a structural specification and it is not a substitute for project-specific design. Barrier heights, spans, loadings, fixings, substrates and exposure all vary from site to site, and the final specification for your project remains the responsibility of you, your designer, your structural engineer or your building control body. We manufacture and supply to the sizes and specification you give us. If you are unsure, send us the details before ordering and we will tell you what we would normally supply for a job like yours.
