Stainless Steel Wire Balustrade & Custom Handrails, Lincolnshire County Council — Lincoln

Dio-Met designed, manufactured and installed bespoke stainless steel metalwork for a Lincolnshire County Council building in Lincoln: brushed stainless steel handrails to the entrance steps and the accessible ramp, together with a stainless steel wire-rope balustrade. As a busy public building it needed hard-wearing, low-maintenance stainless that keeps the entrance safe and accessible, which is exactly where brushed stainless comes into its own.

The project

At the entrance, Dio-Met made and installed brushed stainless steel tubular handrails to both the steps and the accessible ramp, so there is a proper hold on both routes into the building, important on a public entrance that has to work for everyone. Alongside the handrails we designed, made and installed a stainless steel wire-rope balustrade, using 48mm tubular stainless posts and 42mm tubular handrails with 4mm stainless tension-wire infills on adjustable fittings. Everything is in a satin-polished brushed finish that stands up to constant public use and needs little upkeep, and the horizontal wire-rope infill suits commercial and public settings like this, giving a light, open, contemporary look while keeping sightlines clear.

Every run was drawn up on AutoCAD for approval before manufacture, with structural calculations available, so the balustrade fitted the building precisely and met its requirements. It is the kind of commercial metalwork we take on alongside our domestic balustrades and staircases, designed and made in-house at our Sheffield factory.

Expert insight

"Wire-rope balustrade is a natural fit for a public building: it is tough, low-maintenance and keeps the space feeling open. Drawing every run up first and making it in-house is what lets us match it exactly to a building like this."
