Transforming Infrastructure into Art

For this Newcastle kitchen renovation, the client wanted to turn a functional necessity—underfloor pipework—into a visual centerpiece. The solution was a flush-fitted, walk-on glass panel that provides a window into the "industrial" heart of the home while maintaining a seamless, safe floor surface.

• Structural Integrity: We utilized 25mm toughened and laminated safety glass. This specific thickness and composition are engineered to support "concentrated loads," ensuring the floor is perfectly safe for heavy foot traffic, furniture, and daily kitchen activity.

• Industrial Chic Aesthetic: By exposing the copper pipework beneath the floor, the kitchen gained a unique, modern edge that serves as a conversation piece while keeping the infrastructure accessible.

• Flush-Fit Finish: The glass was designed to sit perfectly flush with the surrounding floor finish using our steel support framework, avoiding trip hazards and creating a smooth, high-end transition.

Technical Expert Insight: The Importance of the "Black Border"  & Steel Frame Support

When installing walk-on glass, the most critical technical detail is the support and protection of glass. The glass must sit on a minimum 1.5x its thickness and be supported around all edges, bedded onto a high-quality EPDM rubber or silicone gaskets to prevent glass-to-metal/stone contact. For the Newcastle project, we recommended a black painted border  around the underside of the glass perimeter and our powdercoated steel support framework. The black border isn't just for style; it hide the structural framework and the sealant bed beneath the glass, providing a clean, professional "picture frame" look that obscures the messy reality of the silicone and support steel. Without this, the edge of the glass can look "bubbled" and unfinished.
