Project: Bespoke Curved Glass Balustrade – Bradway, Sheffield
Located in the leafy Sheffield suburb of Bradway, this project involved creating a high-specification landing area at the top of a curved staircase. The client, Josie, required a solution that provided a robust safety barrier for her patio without sacrificing the natural light or the aesthetic flow of her garden.
The Specification
We utilized our Framed Glass Balustrade System 5, customized specifically for the unique "curved twist" of the existing masonry:
-
Structure: Galvanized steel for maximum corrosion resistance, finished in a contemporary Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016) powder coating.
-
Glazing: Faceted glass panels that follow the wall’s curvature, providing a cost-effective alternative to expensive curved glass while maintaining a sleek, modern look.
-
Handrail: A profiled Iroko timber handrail, mounted over a steel ribbon rail for enhanced structural rigidity.
Technical Expert Insight: Faceted vs. Curved Glass on Masonry
When dealing with curved landings or staircases, homeowners often assume that expensive, bespoke curved glass is the only option.
At Dio-Met, we often recommend a faceted glass approach for gentle curves. By precision-engineering the galvanized steel posts to sit at specific angles along the curve, we can use straight, toughened glass panels to "facet" the radius. This significantly reduces the project cost without compromising the UKCA-certified safety of the landing. Furthermore, mounting the Iroko timber over a steel ribbon rail ensures the handrail remains perfectly rigid across the facets, providing a secure grip that exceeds standard domestic safety requirements.
