Project: Frameless Base Channel Balustrade – Thurgoland (S35)

In the village of Thurgoland (S35)—perfectly situated on the border of Sheffield and Barnsley—we recently completed a high-end frameless glass installation for our client, Will. This project is a perfect example of how a structural base channel system can preserve a landscape view while providing a secure, wind-resistant barrier for a terrace.

The Specification: Uninterrupted Views

Will’s garden looks out over the South Yorkshire countryside, so minimizing the "visual noise" of posts or traditional railings was a priority,

  • System: Infinity Frameless Base Channel Balustrade with slotted handrail.

  • Glass: 15mm clear toughened safety glass (structural grade).

  • Fixing: Architectural-grade brushed aluminum base channel.

  • Finish: A slimline stainless steel handrail was added to provide a clean top edge and extra rigidity.

Local Service: Sheffield Postcode, Barnsley Borough

Because Thurgoland (S35) sits right between the two towns, we handled the full survey and installation using our local Sheffield-based team. Much of our work in the S35 and Barnsley area comes from personal recommendations, and this project was no different—Will approached us after seeing our previous work on nearby properties.

Technical Expert Insight: Raking and Drainage on Sloping Terraces

A common challenge we encounter in Thurgoland (S35) and across the hilly landscape of Barnsley is installing a level balustrade on a sloping substrate. While the internal wedge system allows for precise front-to-back leveling (ensuring the glass doesn't lean toward or away from you), it doesn't account for a terrace that "falls" from left to right.

At Dio-Met, we solve this by raking the glass panels. We manufacture the glass so the bottom edge follows the slope of the ground, while the top edge is cut at a specific angle to ensure the handrail remains perfectly level. This creates a much more architectural finish than "stepping" the panels. To address drainage, we either pack the channel up slightly or leave intentional gaps in the run, preventing the balustrade from acting as a dam and trapping water on the terrace.
