Revolutionizing Terrace Design: The Inset Balcony Solution

The Project

This project on the outskirts of Sheffield showcases the perfect marriage of architectural form and structural function. Unlike standard protruding balconies, this inset design is tucked under the main roofline, creating a sheltered outdoor "room." While the aesthetic is sleek, the engineering required a specialist approach to protect the terrace's vital waterproofing.

The Challenge: Protecting the Membrane

The biggest risk with any terrace or inset balcony is water ingress. Standard balustrade posts require drilling through the floor, which can puncture the waterproof membrane and lead to costly leaks in the rooms below. The client needed a robust, safe glass system that maintained the total integrity of the floor seal.

Technical Expert Insight

Technical Expert Insight: This project utilized our specialized Parapet fixing system. While often referred to as a "cavity wall" system because of its versatile mounting plate, its true value here is for waterproof membrane protection . Instead of fixing downward into the terrace floor (and risking leaks), we utilized a side-fix application. This allows the glass balustrade to be securely anchored to the internal face of the masonry wall or parapet. By keeping the fixings entirely separate from the floor's waterproof layer, we ensure the balcony remains 100% watertight while easily meeting the 0.74kN/m residential loading requirements. Balcony weight is taken by placing additional plates on rubber pads onto the waterproof roof, but without the need for any physical fixing.

Aesthetic & Structural Harmony

To complement the modern architectural glazing, we finished the steelwork in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey. The system uses toughened glass panels that provide an unobstructed view of the Sheffield countryside while acting as a highly effective windbreak. The inset nature of the terrace provides natural shading and shelter, making the space usable even in the unpredictable British weather.
