Our client Anam in London required a glass floor solution to prevent the unthinkable, if one of their children were to fall over the third floor balcony railings in their 3-storey town house. Although the gallery landing was protected by traditional railings, kids will be kids and climb / play and generally cause chaos!
Anam had decided that a glass floor would not only provide a peace-of-mind safety barrier but also allow light to transfer through the property almost as it it wasn’t there. As a final touch on the design we also included a heavy duty bracket to the underside of the steel framing which an 80kg chandelier would be suspended from.
A site survey was conducted to establish accurate dimensions and to discuss the best possible glass flooring solution, with the simplest fixing method. A metal frame was designed to sit over the existing floor with a series of toughened and laminated walk-on glass floor panels inset.
The framework was all powdercoated in a cream colour and largely disguised from above with black painted borders to the glass to match the railings. Although the glass is merely a fail-safe, it is fully structural and safe to walk on with a weight bearing capacity of 150kg per metre (minimum).
