Project: Stainless Steel & Wire Balustrade – Dronfield (S18)

In the charming landscape of Dronfield (S18), situated just outside Sheffield, we recently had the pleasure of returning to a beautiful property to add a touch of modern style. This project showcases a sleek horizontal wire balustrade system that balances safety with a minimalist, industrial aesthetic.

The Specification: Low Maintenance, High Style

Our client, Mark, is a returning customer for whom we previously crafted bespoke internal staircases and balustrades. For his external balcony and garden steps, he had a clear vision:

  • Frame: Brushed finish stainless steel posts and handrails for a sophisticated, weather-resistant finish.

  • Infills: Stainless steel tension wires used as horizontal infills.

  • The Goal: Mark specifically chose wire over glass to avoid the maintenance and cleaning requirements often associated with glass panels in an outdoor environment.

  • The View: The tension wires provide an airy, open feel, ensuring that the sprawling countryside vistas remain the focal point of the terrace.

A Trusted Partnership in S18

Because Mark was a returning client, he was already familiar with the Dio-Met standard of craftsmanship. Our team handled the entire process—from the initial site survey in Dronfield (S18) to the final tensioning of the wire system—to ensure the installation integrated seamlessly with the existing garden architecture.

Technical Expert Insight: Navigating Wire Systems and Building Regulations

It is critical to understand the regulatory landscape when choosing a horizontal wire system. In the UK, wire balustrades may not always align with strict building regulations, such as BS 6180, particularly regarding the "ladder effect" which could allow children to climb the horizontal wires and the ‘100mm rule’ for gaps in the system.

At Dio-Met, we solve the "compliance gap" through transparent consultation. For this project in S18, Mark was fully briefed on these regulations before proceeding. Where a project is not subject to formal Building Control sign-off, or where it is used in a specific "adult-only" environment, customers can choose to proceed with this design at their own risk. We ensure the system is technically sound by using high-grade tensioning turnbuckles that prevent the wires from sagging over time, maintaining both the safety and the clean, linear look of the installation.
