Dio-Met are architectural steel fabricators in Sheffield who design and manufacture a wide range of bespoke products to meet customer requirements. This example project was for our client Roger who had seen a similar metal pergola system we had recently completed for another customer, and enquired about our services.
Roger requested a heavy duty steel construction pergola, capable of carrying the weight of a fully loaded grape vine being grown over the top. The weight of the vine was simply too much for the current timber pergola system which was rotting away and becoming dangerous.
This pergola design also included (look closely!) stainless steel wire tension ropes fitted between each of the steel rafter sections to assist the grape vine to grow, and form around the top of the pergola.
The metalwork used was all heavy duty steel sections designed to bolt together, hot-dip galvanized and powdercoated black. Base plates were used to fix down each upright support post, into newly set concrete pads. Roger was having the whole area paved after our installation to complete the garden transformation. We get it, you can buy a timber pergola kit for a few hundred pounds or even a lightweight aluminium version of a pergola from some garden centres, but these products are often flimsy, imported and simply not built to last – nor of course fully customisable!
