Frameless Glass Balcony

Where to use a frameless glass balustrade?

In the home, a frameless design glass balustrades can be used internally on staircases and mezzanine floors (most popularly a side fixed button design) and externally to form Juliet balcony systems or beautiful patio and terrace balustrades (more commonly a base channel system).

Frameless glass systems are also popularly used in retail outlets, schools and office environments to create safety barriers whilst maintaining vision and light flow.

What types of frameless balustrades are available?

Fully Frameless - DioMet offer two designs of structural glass balustrades : Base channel system 4 and side fixing design System 7, both of which require no upright support posts and rely solely on the loading capability of the thick structural toughened glass for gloriously uninterrupted infinity views. Generally, when used without a handrail, toughened and laminated glass is required to conform with UK building regulations.

Our base channel design system can accommodate many different thicknesses of glass including 12mm, 13.5mm, 15mm, 17.5mm, 19mm and 21.5mm so that the appropriate structural glazing thickness can be used for each application (commercial / residential)  with the same base shoe clamp. Where a handrail is used, the most popular option is a stainless steel slotted rail that simply clips onto the glass, again available to suit all six thicknesses of glass noted above.

Our side fixing frameless button system works in very much the same way, offering flexibility in glass thickness and accommodating handrails in exactly the same way. The side fixing glass clamp adapters used are available in either 30mm or 40mm offset as standard.

Semi Frameless - A semi-frameless balustrade design is one that requires partial framing to support the glazed infill panels, usually by way of a supporting baluster post but without a top handrail that would otherwise obstruct the view beyond. Semi-frameless balustrades such as our System 2 are generally used on low-level patio areas, for dividing privacy screens and around swimming pools. A handrail is however usually required to confirm with building regulations when guarding a fall in height over 600mm.
