Simple Staircase Railings

Metal railings are a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor spaces due to their durability, strength, and modern aesthetic. Two popular finishes for metal railings are galvanized and powdercoated. While both finishes provide protection against rust and corrosion, they have distinct differences that may influence your choice for your project.

Galvanization is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to metal surfaces. The zinc coating acts as a sacrificial layer that corrodes before the underlying metal, protecting it from rust and corrosion. The process involves dipping the metal in a hot zinc bath, creating a durable coating that can withstand extreme weather conditions. Galvanized metal railings are known for their strength and durability and are a popular choice for outdoor applications without the requirement for painting.

Galvanized railings are however a more industrial finish, so its usually common practice to apply powdercoating on top of this, for a smooth paintwork finish in the desired colour.

Powder coating, is a process of applying a dry powder to a metal surface electrostatically. The powder is then cured by baking in an oven, creating a hard, durable, and even coating. Powder coating is known for its durability, resistance to chipping, fading, and scratching, and is available in a wide range of colors and finishes (RAL colours). Powder-coated (only) metal railings are a popular choice for indoor  applications and are preferred for their customizable color options. For powdercoating to be used outdoors, the steel must first be galvanized.

When it comes to choosing between galvanized and powder-coated metal railings, the decision ultimately comes down to the application and the desired aesthetic. Galvanized metal railings are ideal for outdoor applications due to their corrosion-resistant properties, making them suitable for harsh weather conditions. However, they are a little industrial looking for some people and may not be ideal for indoor applications where aesthetics are more important. Powder-coated metal railings, on the other hand, offer a wide range of colors and finishes, making them a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor applications where aesthetics are important.

In conclusion, both galvanized and powder-coated metal railings have their benefits and drawbacks. Galvanized metal railings are ideal for outdoor applications, while powder-coated metal railings are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications if the metal is also galvanized first, and offer a wide range of colors and finishes.
