Feature Garden Well
Feature Garden Wells – Glass Well Covers
“Found a water well in your garden? So many people do, and what better way to make a lovely feature out of it than with our walk-on glass well cover systems! We can supply either just the floor glass, or the whole steel framework support too-click to see our latest example….”
Water wells have a long history, dating back some 8,000 years and they are a familiar sight in many of Britain’s picturesque villages- the water well was once a focal point for all those who lived in the area until the 20th century when we began to install indoor plumbing and water systems.
A well is essentially an excavation or structure which is created by digging or drilling a hole into the ground to reach the water source in underground aquifers. The water can then be drawn up by either a bucket or pump.
The British Geological Survey recorded over 105,000 wells and boreholes across England, Wales and Scotland so it is hardly surprising, yet still exceptionally surprising the amount of people that come to us having discovered one in their own gardens. Making a feature out of an old water well not only preserves the history of the UK water systems, but looks pretty darn cool too!
Once the well has been uncovered, the most impressive way to make a feature out of it would be to install a structural, walk-on glass panel that will allow people to see right down the well and even walk over it safely. Lights can be installed to really amp up the feature, making it look especially awesome in the evenings.
Below is our most recent glass well cover example which was manufactured and supplied to a garden landscaper as part of a garden renovation project for his client and the photos he sent look pretty impressive.
For the most part, our glass well covers are usually ordered with a steel support framework to hold the glass in place, and provide a solid edge to pave, tile or floor up to. Installation is usually pretty straight-forward too, with no specialist skills required. One thing to watch out for however is condensation- the best way to eradicate this would be to vent your well area, or for particularly damp systems, install an air pump.
All our glass well covers and steel support frameworks are made in Yorkshire and we ship the products out by courier all over the UK. Each glass well cover is made to order too, so you can specify the exact size required, to the millimetre.
The glass used in our well covers is always toughened and laminated, a minimum of 25.5mm thick in line with UK standards and our frameworks are all fabricated to the relevant BS 1090-2 regulations for structural support. For any well over 1000mm diameter, we recommend using our 33mm toughened and laminated walk on floor glass.
Like the idea but don’t have a real water well in your garden? It’s still possible to replicate the effect, you just need a spade to get started!
