Shed Security Tips
The security of your outbuildings such as sheds, garages and workshops will always take second priority over your home. On average people store over £2000 worth of equipment and high value goods such as tools, bicycles, gardening equipment and fishing tackle in their sheds - how much would these items cost you to replace? How inconvenient would this be?
Unfortunately most people only turn to shed security measures once it is too late, once the horse has bolted as they say.
A few very basic, reasonably cheap measures can be put into place to ensure your outbuilding are secured and deter / prevent potential thieves :
- Always remember to lock your shed and garage after use. It may sound obvious but thieves only require a very small window of opportunity to strike.
- Avoid storing high value goods in sheds. Although a great additional storage space, take great consideration into whether your prized golf clubs, power tools and unicycle are best kept inside the house instead.
- Secure your shed doors properly by fitting a shed security bar with anti-tamper fixing. DioMet have designed our very own shed security bar which has gone through numerous revisions to create what we believe to be the strongest, most versatile shed bar on the market. This bar is from solid steel and provides the greatest resistance against any determined burglar in hacksaw tests when compared to other weaker box-section designs.
- Secure any hinges with anti-tamper bolts or screws. Although the above shed security bar will cover the hinges as well, it is always best to cover all bases when considering your security plan.
- Replace any rotten door frames or window surrounds that may weaken the structure.
- Replace broken glass panels and / or cover windows with security grilles or laminated glass panels.
- Fit a battery operated alarm system or extend the home alarm system to cover the shed / garage.
- Security mark all higher value goods such as your drills, lawnmower and strimmers by etching postcodes into the items.
- Ensure your household insurance covers your shed. Often an overlooked simple measure.
- Chain any higher value items together, or to the shed itself.
