The Pulborough Transformation: Seamless Multi-Level Access

Darren’s property required a complex structural solution to link his elevated living space with both his garden and a new poolside decking area. Dio-Met designed, manufactured, and installed a wrap-around steel balcony that serves as the central hub for his outdoor living.

• UKCA Certified Structural Steel: The main balcony is built on a hot-dip galvanized steel ring beam, powder-coated in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey. As a UKCA-certified manufacturer (BS EN 1090), we ensured the balcony structure and adjoining steel staircases met all load-bearing requirements for a large walk-out platform.

• Dual-Access Staircases: We integrated two custom steel staircases. To prioritize safety around the pool area, the treads were left with a natural galvanized finish to maximize slip resistance, while the stringers were powder-coated to match the main balcony aesthetic.

• The "Pool-Jump" Gate: A unique bespoke request from Darren involved a safety gate integrated into the poolside balustrade. Designed for his family to jump directly into the pool from the deck, it showcases our ability to adapt our System 1 Stainless Steel & Glass balustrades for playful, custom functionality without compromising structural safety.

• Low-Maintenance Integration: The use of composite decking and stainless steel ensures that Darren spends his time enjoying the pool rather than maintaining timber or painting rust.

Technical Expert Insight: Structural Integrity in Multi-Level "Wrap-Around" Systems

Engineering a wrap-around balcony involves complex "cantilever and post" calculations. Unlike a simple rectangular balcony, a wrap-around structure must account for torsional (twisting) forces at the corners. For Darren’s project, we utilized a robust ring-beam design supported by strategically placed posts to ensure zero "bounce" when moving between the garden and pool staircases. Furthermore, because this was a poolside installation, we paid particular attention to the galvanic environment. By hot-dip galvanizing the structural steel and using high-grade stainless steel for the balustrades, we've created a system that is almost immune to the humidity and chemical splash-back common in pool areas. This is the benefit of a design-first approach—we solve the environmental challenges before the first bolt is tightened.
