10.76mm laminated glass is most popularly used in balustrade systems either with or without a handrail. In most framed glass balustrade designs, laminated glass is not ‘required’ in order to be building regulation compliant but many customers, especially those with small children, will opt for the laminated glass as an extra safety precaution :
How Glass Breaks
If a pane of 10mm toughened glass were to break (however unlikely) it would shatter into thousands of tiny safe pieces however if a 10.76mm toughened and laminated glass panel (effectively two panes ‘glued’ together) was used instead, the glass would shatter but remain fully intact and secured to the other pane. So to put it simply if your toughened glass were to break, it would fall out of its clamping system and leave a dangerous void whereas a laminate glass would still remain in place and provide a safe edge barrier.
