Precision Engineering for Central London’s Architecture
When Guy approached us with a requirement for basement access in the heart of London, the challenge was the building’s footprint. The staircase needed to follow the organic curve of the existing wall while transitioning seamlessly from street level.

Curved Geometry: Unlike standard "off-the-shelf" stairs, this system was engineered in our Sheffield workshop to mirror the building's flow.

Industrial Durbar Treads: We utilized durbar (checkerplate) non-slip treads. This offers a highly durable, cost-effective alternative to traditional cast iron, providing a secure descent into the basement in all weather conditions.

Seamless Balustrade Integration: A key detail was the termination of the handrails. The staircase balustrade was designed to bolt directly into the existing street-level railings, creating a unified architectural perimeter.

In-House Installation: To ensure the curve sat perfectly against the masonry, the project was installed by our own specialist fitters. At Dio-Met, we never use subcontractors; our Sheffield-made quality is matched by Sheffield-trained installers.
Technical Expert Insight: Structural Integrity in Curved Steel
Engineering a curved staircase requires complex calculations to manage torsional forces. Unlike a straight flight, a curved stair wants to "twist" under load. Our solution involves decades of research into structural bracing and plate thickness. By using a bespoke-rolled stringer and securing it with high-tensile fixings, we ensure the stair meets BS 1090 and UKCA certification requirements. This isn't just a fire escape; it’s a structural asset that adds significant value to a Central London property, providing safe, permanent access that is legally compliant and built to last for generations.
