Installing Frameless Glass Balustrade

Not all staircases are created equal, although many traditional timber stairs follow a similar design principle; wooden newel posts and vertical spindles with a matching timber handrail. There is simply never going to be a glass balustrade system ‘off the shelf’ that would be appropriate, so any such new glass system would be made to order to fit the dimensions of the existing staircase.

This latest example for our client Jake uses our frameless glass balustrade System 4; comprising aluminium base channel with structural toughened glass infills and stainless steel slotted handrails. Jake provided some basic dimensions and the new glass balustrade system was designed to suit.

Taking on the installation himself as a competent tradesman, Jake removed the existing timber bannister and then doubled the thickness and strength of the timber stair stringer in order to accommodate the 75mm wide base channel track. The new glass balustrade flows up the stair and around the small landing area seamlessly with a continuous stainless steel handrail used.

See below before and after pictures which may assist other customers with similar existing staircases to understand the requirement and method to adapt an old staircase in preparation for the installation of a frameless glass balustrade. Although Jake was a tradesman, any competent builder should easily be able to install one of our glass balustrades.
