Installing Glass Balustrade to Patio Slabs

Fitting a Balustrade to Your Patio: Installing a Glass Balustrade to Paving Flags

Transforming your outdoor space into a stylish, safe, and sophisticated area is a breeze with the right design and materials. Recently, we had the pleasure of working with our client, Debbie, in Sheffield, to create an impressive patio space that showcases our System 1 glass balustrade design. This blog post takes you through the installation process and highlights why it's crucial to do it right.

Why Glass Balustrades? Glass balustrades are the epitome of elegance and modernity. They offer safety without compromising the view. Whether it's a garden, a patio, or a balcony, these sleek structures add a touch of luxury and create a seamless connection between your indoor and outdoor spaces.

The Installation Method: When it comes to installing a glass balustrade to paving stones, the method is crucial. It's not about taking shortcuts; it's about ensuring the structure is stable, secure, and durable. Any glass balustrade will only ever be as strong as what it fixes to, or indeed how it is fixed. Here's a breakdown of the installation process we followed for Debbie's glass balustrade project:

  1. Core Drilling: The first step is core drilling. This involves creating holes with a specialist tool (the core drill) in the paving stones where the balustrade posts will be placed. Core drilling is a precise method that ensures the posts are securely anchored to the ground and not reliant on the patio flag stones themselves.

  2. Setting Posts in Grout : Once the holes are drilled, the stainless steel baluster posts are placed in them. To ensure stability, these posts are then set in grout. This step is essential because it provides a solid foundation for the entire balustrade system.

  3. The System 1 Design: Our System 1 glass balustrade design is a popular choice for clients like Debbie. It features brushed finish 316G stainless steel posts and handrails, complemented by 10mm clear toughened safety glass infills. This combination not only looks stunning but also offers the necessary safety and security.

Why Core Drilling and Grout Setting? Some may wonder why we emphasize core drilling and setting posts in grout. The answer is simple: stability and longevity. Here's why:

  1. Strength: Core drilling creates holes that perfectly fit the posts and enough room for adequate grouting, ensuring a snug and stable fit. This strength is crucial for safety, especially in high-traffic areas or raised patio systems.

  2. Durability: By setting the posts in grout, we're guaranteeing long-term durability. The grout provides a solid base that can withstand environmental factors and wear over time with no reliance on a mechanical fixing.

  3. Safety: A securely installed balustrade is a safe one. It prevents accidents, especially in elevated areas like balconies or raised patios.

  4. Flexibility : Installing posts in this method will allow some adjustment in height to compensate for any uneven tile surfaces that would otherwise require shimming or grinding with a fixed base plate system.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls: Some may be tempted to take shortcuts by simply screwing or bolting the posts to the top surface of paving stones. However, this method is unreliable and unsafe. Most patios are laid on a bed of mortar, which isn't suitable for mechanical fixings. This shortcut can compromise the structure's integrity, leading to potential hazards down the line. It might be a preferred method for the DIY installer or rogue builder, but certainly not our style!

Our core-drill and grout fixed glass balustrade system will look exactly the same as a base fixed system, since we use the same raised cover rose at the base of the baluster posts to tidy up around the core-drilled holes. Its a clean and tidy design, but not to be confused with an inferior installation!

Debbie's project in Sheffield is a shining example of how the right installation method can transform an outdoor space. By core drilling and setting the posts in grout, we ensured a safe, stable, and stunning glass balustrade that will last for years to come. Don't cut corners when it comes to safety and aesthetics – choose the right method for your project and elevate your outdoor space with a glass balustrade.
