Sheffield Metalwork Repairs
Blacksmith Repair Works
Dio-Met continue to work with Sheffield City Council as the primary Blacksmith repair works contractor and have secured a repeat contract for the works for a further year minimum. The repair work is varied and includes a multitude of metalwork repairs around the Sheffield region.
At Dio-Met we have never really considered ourselves as blacksmiths as the term is generally used to describe more traditional ironmongery and forging than what we offer as an architectural metalwork contractor- The term blacksmith conjures up the image of a large chap hammering away at a molten hot steel bar over a pointy anvil. A blacksmith by definition however (Wikipedia definition that is) is a metalsmith who creates objects from wrought iron or steel, so I guess we can in fact add that feather to our cap.
The blacksmiths contract for Sheffield City Council is one we have held for two years now with an extension now agreed for the next year’s work also. The works are varied and include repairs and improvements to many council houses and estates including door and lock emergency repairs, installation of new access handrails, safety barriers and railings.
The majority of work however is carried out to properties requiring improved levels of access by installing new ramp handrails, door grab rails and stair bannisters- all designed to improve the ease of access for the end user and comply with current health and safety regulations. Often existing handrails are already in place but require maintenance or repairs due to rusting or damage caused over years of use- a simple call out job for DioMet.
Below are some examples of the metalwork repairs and installations that have been carried out on behalf of Sheffield City Council. The materials are always chosen to be cost-effective and all new installations designed to be simple and functional as a priority.
Example 1: Broken steel ramp access handrail repairs
In the before and after photos you can see the work required and the work completed in order to repair these existing ramp handrails. In the green handrail example, the end of the rail had become detached and required rewelding into position to make safe. The white handrail had and entire section missing which was fabricated and installed on site.
Example 2: Bin chute repairs
Bin chutes seem to be one of the regular call out repair jobs- users either abuse the chute-covers forcing large waste items into them or remove the chutes entirely for the same purpose. Excessive force applied to the bin chute hinges will break or at least damage the mechanism and require an emergency repair.
Example 3: New access handrails
Any set of steps with 3 or more risers generally requires an access handrail under current building regulations for domestic residences- new handrails are therefore a regular requirement for DioMet. Our handrails are stocked in galvanized finish steel ready to be installed and by using key-clamp fittings, the fabrication time is significantly reduced meaning on-site installations can be carried out instantly.
Example 4: Railing repairs and replacement
Garden and boundary railings are often damaged for one reason or another and require repair. More often than not a simple call out with some welding equipment is enough to perform a site repair however occasionally new panels are required. DioMet can easily match existing railings with little more than a photograph and a few measurements.
We might not be any good at getting rid of ghosts but if you have a blacksmiths repair or installation requirement, who ya gonna call?
