The Challenge: Creating Useable Space on Two Levels

The client required a dual solution for two sets of first-floor French doors. The objective was to create a large, elevated patio area that remained aesthetically consistent across the rear elevation, while ensuring the ground-level space beneath the main balcony remained dry and useable year-round.

• Cohesive Design: We installed a matching stainless steel and glass balustrade system across both the Juliet and the Walkout balcony for a seamless architectural finish.

• Corrosion Resistance: The main structural steel frame was hot-dip galvanized and finished with a durable white powder coating to withstand the coastal-adjacent Hull environment.

• Glass Balustrade : The glass balustrade to the main walkout balcony and the juliet balcony were supplied in a modern contrasting brushed stainless steel marine grade 316

• Low-Maintenance Surface: Modern composite decking was utilized for its non-slip properties and fire resistance, providing a long-lasting alternative to traditional timber.

Technical Expert Insight: Underdrawing and Effective Water Diversion

When designing a walkout balcony over a patio or doorway, managing rainwater is critical to prevent the area below from becoming unusable in certain conditions. For this Hull project, we engineered a custom aluminium drip-tray system installed beneath the composite decking joists. These powder-coated trays are pitched to collect water and divert it into a perimeter guttering system. This "underdrawing" does more than just manage drainage—it creates a permanent, dry canopy for the ground floor, effectively doubling the useable outdoor square footage regardless of the weather.
