Replacing Timber Bannisters with Glass

“Most traditional homes have a timber bannister system with wooden spindles, newel posts and handrails; these can either be a timber stain finish, or often painted white. Our private customer Brenda in Nottingham got in contact with us to discuss options for replacing her old timber staircase with something more contemporary and modern. She had already seen our products online and wanted to introduce a glass system but didn’t know where to start.

After discussing the options available, we arranged a site survey to finalise the details and take accurate measurements to design the new balustrade system on AutoCAD. The design proposed uses satin polished stainless steel handrails, posts and glass clamps with clear 10mm toughened glass infills.

The existing newel posts were cut down and capped with bespoke manufactured cover plates, which were welded to the base of our tubular upright baluster posts and rather than spending hours filling and sanding the holes left when removing the timber spindles, we supplied and installed a stainless steel flat bar strip along the base stringer to match in with the design and effortlessly provide a simple, neat finish.

The overall glass balustrade result is exactly what Brenda was hoping for as it provides a clean, modern look with the use of glass panels which allow greater light transfer through the hallway of the property. See below before and after pictures of the system:
