A steel spine staircase is a type of metal staircase that is constructed using steel as the primary support material. Frameless glass balustrades on steel spine stairs

These balustrades are made of toughened glass, which is strong and durable enough to be used as a safety barrier, typically 15-20mm thick. They are generally attached to the steel spine using stainless steel or aluminum clamps or brackets which in the above example have been powdercoated in black to match the steel spine framework. 

Adding frameless glass balustrades to a steel spine staircase can enhance the overall aesthetic of the space and give it a sense of openness. However, it's important to keep in mind that glass can be slippery when wet, so the staircase must be designed to minimize the risk of accidents. To comply with safety regulations (namely BS6180) , a handrail is often added to the top of the glass, or where applicable, the opposite wall.
