Engineering for the Highlands: The Oban Infinity Balcony

Located in the breathtaking countryside near Oban, this project required a structural solution that could withstand the rigorous Scottish climate while offering an "infinity" view of the landscape. The large walkout system was custom-engineered to follow the unique architectural footprint of the property.

  • Hybrid Material Finish: The main structural framework was hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated in Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016). To ensure long-term durability on high-traffic areas, the access staircase treads were left as pure galvanized steel. This prevents the unsightly "wear-through" often seen on painted steps after years of use.

  • Frameless Infinity Balustrade: To maximize the rolling hillside views, we installed a System 7 Frameless Glass balustrade to the front elevation. The toughened and laminated glass provides a seamless safety barrier without any vertical posts.

  • Low-Maintenance Surface: The balcony floor features premium composite decking, providing a slip-resistant, rot-proof surface that complements the modern grey steelwork.

Technical Expert Insight: Structural Wind Loading & UKCA Compliance in Scotland

Designing a large walkout balcony for a location like Oban involves more than just supporting weight; it requires calculating for high wind-load zones. In coastal or highland regions, a frameless glass balustrade acts like a "sail," exerting massive pressure on the base fixings. For Mary’s balcony, our Sheffield engineering team utilized heavy-wall structural steel sections and deep-set concrete footings for the support legs. Crucially, as this is a primary structural addition to the home, the entire system is UKCA certified. This certification is a legal requirement for structural steelwork in the UK; without it, a homeowner may face significant legal hurdles during a property sale or insurance claim. By choosing Dio-Met, Mary received a fully compliant, legally certified structure designed to survive the most demanding weather conditions in the UK.
