Bathroom design considerations
Tips for Planning a Bathroom Design
Keep it simple
One of the most important considerations when planning a bathroom design is to keep it simple and resist the urge to overload a design or cram in features. Simplicity is attractive and affords a more spacious feel even in smaller bathrooms.
Filling a modest area with double basins, a bath, shower, WC and storage can soon lead to a cluttered room – consider perhaps creating a wet room with toughened glass screening instead of plumping for both a shower and bath? Use a mirrored storage unit rather than storage and mirrors separately?
Consider the use
Are you designing with personal and functional use in mind or resale value? If approaching the design from a buyer’s viewpoint, with resale value high on the priority list, it would be prudent to include a bath for family use, especially when the target market has small children.
If you don’t plan on going anywhere for some years, make the most of it and design the bathroom around what you want – It’s your bathroom right? After several years the design it likely to be outdated anyway and require some element of renovation.
Storage matters
Consider concealed cisterns for a seamless, attractive and less cluttered look – they’re also easier to clean. Storage units can also be key to continuing the less cluttered theme – introduce mirrored wall cabinets and heated towel rails to store items effectively but don’t overdo it, there are other rooms in the house to keep your pile of towels in.
Remain family flexible
More often than not a bathroom is a room for the whole family and needs to serve both practical function and visual aesthetics – one clever way to achieve this is through a double basin if you have the space as often more than one person is using the bathroom at the same time.
Recess walls for extra storage and to keep a clean look – corner storage racks are not the most attractive feature or particularly sturdy when loaded up with various bottles and potions!
Soft-close toilets can be a godsend in the middle of the night, non-slip surfaces in the shower add practicality and safety and built in shower heads rather than trailing pipes are all wise choices for family room.
