Bespoke Metal Balustrade Railings — Sheffield, S11

Dio-Met surveyed, designed, manufactured and installed a full set of bespoke black metal balustrade railings around a multi-level garden at a large brick home in Sheffield, S11. The property steps down the slope across several levels, so the railings guard the external staircase, the raised terraces and decking, and the retaining walls, tying the whole garden together in one consistent design. Everything was made in our Sheffield workshops and fitted by our own team.

The brief

A sloping garden on several levels needs guarding wherever there is a drop, and the client wanted that done properly and in one coherent look rather than a patchwork of odd railings. The job took in the external steps down to a lower entrance, the raised terraces off the house, the edge of the decking and the tops of the retaining walls. Because the levels and angles all differ, the railings had to be surveyed and made to fit each run exactly.

Design and fabrication

Dio-Met surveyed the site and set out each run to suit the changing levels, steps and angles, then designed and made the railings in our own Sheffield workshops. The design uses a clean vertical bar infill, which keeps the sightlines open across the garden while meeting the guarding requirements for the level changes and steps. As structural guarding to external steps and raised areas, the steelwork is made to BS EN 1090 and UKCA marked. The finish is black, galvanised then powder-coated so it stands up to the weather for years with little upkeep.

The railings follow the staircase down to the lower entrance, run along the raised terraces at house level, and carry on around the decking and retaining walls, so the same detail reads all the way through the garden.

Installation

Our own fitters installed the railings across the site, working to the levels set at survey so each run sat true and the handrail lines stayed consistent up the steps and along the terraces. Doing the survey, fabrication and fit ourselves keeps the quality and the fit under our control from start to finish, which matters on a job like this where nothing is a standard length and every run meets the next.

Expert insight

"A tiered garden is really a series of one-off railings that all have to line up and match. Surveying it properly and making every run to measure is the only way to get the levels, the steps and the look right across the whole site."

Frequently asked questions

Do you make railings to fit sloping and multi-level gardens? Yes. We survey the site and make each run to measure to suit the steps, levels and angles, so the railings fit exactly and the design carries through consistently, as on this Sheffield S11 project.

Are your external railings UKCA marked? Yes. Structural steelwork that guards steps and raised areas is manufactured to BS EN 1090 and UKCA marked, designed and made in-house at our Sheffield factory. Our balustrade building regulations guide explains the height and loading requirements.

What finish do you use on outdoor railings? For external work we galvanise the steel and then powder-coat it, here in black, which gives a tough, low-maintenance finish that lasts for years. Any RAL colour is available.

Do you cover Sheffield and beyond? Yes. This project is in Sheffield, S11, close to our workshop, and we manufacture in Sheffield and install nationwide, supply-only or fully fitted.
