Made-to-order steel spiral staircases, designed and manufactured in Sheffield. A spiral takes up less floor area than any other stair shape, which is usually exactly why people choose one.

Every spiral is made for its opening, so tell us your design ideas — they can carry as much or as little detail as you want.

Domestic or commercial

We build to the regulations for the building use, whether that is a private house or a commercial premises. Spirals are governed by BS 5395 as well as Approved Document K, and are classified by intended use — the category sets the minimum clear width, so a loft access stair and a main flight are not the same thing. Finish

Anything going outside is galvanised first. That is what stops it rusting and it is not optional on an external stair. Galvanised and left is the standard on commercial external fire escapes; for external residential work we galvanise and then powder coat over the top, which gives an even colour in whatever shade you want with the corrosion protection still doing its job underneath.

Powder coating on its own is for internal stairs. Inside there is no weather to protect against, so the coating goes straight onto the steel.

UKCA certification — and why it is not only a commercial concern

Our own staircases are UKCA certified to BS EN 1090-2. That is a legal requirement for structural steelwork, not a badge we have chosen to carry.

It matters on domestic work as much as commercial. If your project has to be signed off by building control — and on a new build it will be — the staircase certification forms part of that. It is the kind of thing that surfaces late, when the stair is already in.

Off-the-shelf spirals

We will work with customers to source and adapt a bought-in spiral where budget is the deciding factor, and we will be straight about what it means: those stairs do not carry our UKCA certification, because we did not manufacture them.

That is a cost-saving decision for you to take, and the risk of taking it sits with you. It is not something we recommend. If the job needs certifying, it needs to be one of ours.

Full service, or just the stair

We can take it from survey and design through manufacture to installation, with our own site teams working nationwide. Equally, if you want a DIY package to fit yourself, that is fine too — tell us which you are after.

Most staircases are manufactured and completed within 6 to 8 weeks of order, depending on the design and your deadline.

Before you order

Our steel staircase buying guide compares spiral against straight, dog-leg, kite winder and curved, and is honest about the trade-offs — spirals are harder to carry furniture up and the useful width of each tread is narrower than the diameter suggests. Good for occasional access, cellars and tight corners; less good as the only route to a bedroom floor.
