Tools
You will want to have the following tools when preparing to set up your handrail: Drill/Driver, Drill bit set, Hammer, Tape measure, spirit level and maybe a Stud Finder,.
Measure
The first step is to measure your stairs and ensure that they comply with your local building codes. Since handrails are required for safety precautions, it is important that you understand and follow the rules and obligations. You should do this before you purchase your railing to ensure that the rail material you choose will fit in your home. Generally speaking, measuring along the angle of the stair from the top to the bottom should give a good indication of the handrail length required. In most applications handrails are set between 900mm and 1000mm above the line of the stair treads.
Fit the Rail to the Right Height
You can now attach it onto the wall. The rail should be parallel to the stairs, and it may be easiest to have someone watch out for you while you place it in the right position.
To match the rail to the stairs correctly, hold a spirit level up from one of the treads and make a mark at the desired height, do the same thing 2 or 3 steps further up; these marks can now be joined by marking with a pencil - this has now given you a line to eye up the rail with at the correct height.
Ensure the rail is central on the stairs, mark through the fixing brackets and simply screw to the wall whist maintaining the correct height as indicated in the previous step.
We have a range of options available in stainless steel, galvanized finish metal, powdercoated handrails and our most popular addition the grooved end stainless steel handrail.
