Being certified to ISO or British Standards proves that your organisation works to international or national best practice, demonstrating your credibility and competence to your customers. CE marking certification is a legal standard that any structural steelwork must conform to known as BS 1090-1

DioMet have been CE marked for years now and our latest certificates have arrived in the post today for both our externally audited quality systems: ISO 9001 and BS EN 1090-1 upto Execution Class 2. This may be jargon to the general reader but it’s the law and something many buyers are entirely unaware of, unfortunately.

ISO 9001 sets out the criteria for a quality management system and is the only standard in its class that can be certified- it is not however a legal requirement. ISO 9001 is a standard based on a number of principles but focuses strongly on customers, feedback, continual improvement and management. The easiest way to describe this standard in basic terms is ‘quality assurance’

BS EN1090-1 is however an entirely different beast and is indeed a legal requirement. Structural metalwork in the UK must be CE marked under this certification and the aim of the directive is to harmonise the safety performance of construction products across the EU.

As of July 1^st 2014 any manufactured structural metal components or kits that have been made in the UK or imported must comply with the above CE marking regulations and as such it is a criminal offence to supply such structural metalwork without it.

Unfortunately in this industry many buyers are still unaware of these regulations and will be purchasing illegal goods from uncertified traders. Fortunately however, the crack-down on illegal traders is picking up pace.

Structural steelwork does not just refer to those that form the bones of a building – balustrades and balconies that were previously described as ‘secondary steelwork’ of course fall under this legislation given that they are used to prevent falls from height, and are structurally tested.
