Curved Stainless Steel Handrail on Posts — Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire

Dio-Met surveyed, made and installed a curved stainless steel handrail to a private home in Beaconsfield. The handrail follows a sweeping semi-helical garden wall and the steps beside it, giving a safe, comfortable handhold the whole way while suiting the setting. It is a marine-grade 316 stainless handrail with a brushed finish, mounted on posts with offset brackets, and the curve was fabricated and polished by hand on site to match the wall exactly. The brief

The garden is reached by a set of steps beside a curving, semi-helical brick wall that steps down with the ground. The client wanted a stainless steel handrail to make the steps and the slope safe to use, but one that followed the sweep of the wall cleanly rather than sitting awkwardly across it in straight sections. The finish mattered too: a smooth, even brushed stainless rail to suit a well-kept garden. Getting that curve right, on a wall that is not a simple radius, was the whole challenge of the job.

Making the curve

The wall is semi-helical, not a true radius, so the handrail could not simply be rolled to a single curve and dropped on. This is where the skilled work comes in, and it is why a job like this is survey, workshop and site combined.

At survey we measured the wall in chords, and from those measurements set out a true-radius best fit, a single rolled curve that comes as close as possible to the real line of the wall. That rolled rail is the starting point. On site, our fabricators then work the rail to the wall by hand, easing and adjusting the curve with a pipe bender so it tracks the semi-helical sweep as closely as it can be made to. Once the fit is right and the posts are set, the whole rail is fully mechanically polished in place, so the joins and adjustments disappear into one consistent brushed finish from end to end.

It is slower and more skilled than fitting a standard straight rail, but it is the only way to get a curved handrail to sit properly against a wall that is not a clean geometric shape.

How it was fixed, and why

The posts were set into the ground behind the wall, rather than core-drilled down into the brickwork itself. That was a deliberate choice, and a better one here for several reasons:

  • It keeps the option open to remove or alter the handrail in future, without leaving drilled holes in the wall
  • It gives a much greater range of adjustment during installation, which matters on a curved run where every post position is slightly different
  • It avoids drilling at an angle into the wall's angled soldier course of bricks, which risks cracking the bricks or damaging the mortar joints

Core-drilling into the top of a decorative, stepped brick wall at an angle is exactly the kind of thing that can crack a brick or blow a mortar joint. Fixing into the ground behind the wall sidesteps all of that, protects the brickwork, and gives a cleaner, more adjustable, and reversible result.

What is the difference between a true radius and a semi-helical curve? A true radius is a constant curve, like part of a circle, and can be rolled to a single setting. A semi-helical wall changes as it sweeps and steps down, so no single rolled radius fits it perfectly. It takes on-site fabrication and adjustment to make a handrail track it closely.

Why fix the posts into the ground rather than into the wall? It keeps the handrail removable and adjustable, and it avoids core-drilling at an angle into decorative brickwork, which can crack bricks or damage mortar joints. On this stepped, angled soldier-course wall, fixing into the ground behind it was the safer and cleaner solution.
