External Metal Staircases
External Metal Staircases
“Buying an external steel staircase is a simple process with Dio-Met and there are a range of options available to suit most budgets from a basic fire escape or traditional style access stair to something more luxurious with modern glass balustrades, composite decking or floor glass….”
With a few very basic dimensions of your requirement our team can work with you to provide a quotation for a whole range of metal staircase designs to suit your preferences, the use of the stair and of course your budget. A site survey is generally an available option (chargeable) however not usually required for quotation purposes.
Although always made to order and bespoke, most of our steel staircases follow the same design principle of the base structure and a range of options can then be included to tailor the stair to meet your needs, typical options include :
Staircase Finish
Any external metal staircase we provide will be hot-dip galvanized which offers the best weather resistance and longevity to your steelwork- far superior to any primer painted steelwork. The galvanized finish is basic, functional and cost-effective but can look a bit too industrial for many domestic applications, which is when clients should consider having some or all of the steelwork powdercoated.
Powdercoating is a durable paint finish which is applied on top of the galvanized steel. Powdercoating is done purely for aesthetic reasons but can vastly change the overall appearance of a basic metal staircase; a finish that can be completed to almost any RAL colour. We would not generally recommend the stair treads themselves are powdercoated however, particularly for high use stairs where this could start to wear .The below example shows the contrast between a galvanized finish base structure with a powdercoated metal railing / balustrade.
Balustrade
The balustrade (or railing) at the sides and landing areas of your steel staircase can dramatically change the overall aesthetic of the structure. A standard infill bar railing system offers a functional and cost-effective barrier however this can be upgraded to a whole range of different balustrade designs. One of the most popular upgrades for domestic residences is to use a stainless steel and glass balustrade to add a contemporary touch of style. Often the same balustrade system will then also be used complete other areas of the garden / patio.
Treads
A typical stair tread would be either checkerplate steel or open mesh flooring as standard although this can be upgraded to pan-style treads which would allow for either concrete infill or most commonly supplied with a composite decking board infill to soften the staircase visually. The above photograph illustrates the pan-style treads with composite decking.
Any steel staircase would need to be manufactured by a UKCA certified manufacturer like Dio-Met in order to be building regulation compliant. The design of your staircase may differ depending on usage, for example there are different regulations for residential properties, commercial premises and office buildings.
You can obtain a quotation for a basic metal staircase with our quotation tool although for any upgrades or bespoke requirements, please contact our sales team.

Every steel staircase we produce is made in our own Sheffield workshops by our in house steel fabricators using locally sourced raw materials. All external processes such as the galvanizing and powdercoating are also completed in the Yorkshire region.
