• Scope: Design, AutoCAD detailing, fabrication, and professional installation of a weather-proof glass barrier for a waterproofed flat roof.

Engineering Around Constraints: The Sheffield Case Study

Sue faced a common architectural dilemma: how to install a safety balustrade on a flat roof without puncturing the waterproof membrane. Traditional base-fixed systems pose a high risk of water ingress, and standard coping stones are rarely structural enough to support the required 0.74kN loading.

• Non-Invasive Fixing: Our engineering team designed a system that bypasses the roof deck entirely. By using side-fixed wall bracketry, the load is transferred directly into the building’s structural masonry.

• Privacy & Aesthetics: To balance "view vs. seclusion," we utilized clear glass for the front-facing panels and frosted privacy glass for the neighbouring sides.

• Durable Finish: All steelwork was hot-dip galvanized and powder-coated in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, providing a seamless match to modern window profiles and ensuring long-term rust resistance.

Technical Expert Insight: Solving the "Leaky Roof" Problem

In flat roof applications, the integrity of the waterproof layer is paramount. Most "off-the-shelf" kits require drilling into the roof deck, which instantly voids most roofing warranties. At Dio-Met, we utilize structural side-fixings and substantial rectangular box sections to create a rigid frame that doesn't need to fix to the roof surface. This ensures the system meets BS 6180 standards for domestic safety at a 1100mm height, without the client ever having to worry about a damp ceiling.
