Project Overview

Location: Oughtibridge, Sheffield

System: Dio-Met System 1 Glass Balustrade (Side-Mounted)

Scope: Design, manufacture, and installation of a bespoke stainless steel and glass balustrade for a residential raised decking area.

Design Challenges & Solutions

The client in Oughtibridge required a solution that would secure their newly decked balcony without losing the panoramic views of the Sheffield landscape. Additionally, the proximity of the neighboring property necessitated a structural privacy solution that didn't feel "heavy" or block out the light.

• Space-Saving Mounting: By using side-mounted (face-fixed) stainless steel posts, we preserved the maximum usable floor area on the composite decking.

• Dual-Finish Glass: We utilized clear toughened safety glass for the front elevation to maintain the views, transitioning to a frosted (sandblasted) opaque finish for the side panels.

• Material Selection: Grade 316 brushed stainless steel was used for both the posts and the handrail to ensure a corrosion-resistant, low-maintenance finish suitable for the exposed Oughtibridge elevation.

Technical Expert Insight: Structural Side-Fixing & Balcony Leverage

When installing a side-mounted balustrade system like our System 1, the "moment" (or leverage) at the fixing point is significantly higher than a top-mounted system. To counteract this, all Dio-Met side-mount posts feature an internal reinforcement spigot at the base. This additional internal component significantly increases the structural rigidity of the post at its highest stress point, ensuring the system can easily handle the lateral pressure of people leaning against the handrail. By utilizing these reinforced posts alongside heavy-duty M12 fixings with specific edge-distance spacing, we ensure a rock-solid installation that will never "flex" or loosen over time.
