Digging around in the garden when landscaping or renovating your home can uncover old wells and water systems which can be turned into an attractive feature with our walk on glass well covers. Here’s our latest example which was supplied to our customer Douglas for installation into his garden paving, over the top of a well. 

All the glass used in our well cover systems is toughened, laminated and safe to walk on and often supplied with a steel support ring of which we have 3 main designs:

Tile up to style steel frame

Essentially exactly as it sounds, a steel framework that is designed to be tiled up to, or floored up to in many cases with either laminates or wood planks, decking or paving. This frame takes its support from the ground around the edges of the well or floor cut out and provides a solid barrier to floor upto, whilst protecting the glass edge.

Drop in style metal frame

Again, pretty much as the title suggests; this framework is one that is designed to ‘drop’ into place and requires little installation other than simply placing into your well or void. This framework laps around the perimeter of the opening to take its structural support and has a ‘Z’ style section that holds the glass flush to the finished floor level.

Bolt in style frame

This framework is designed to fit within the well or floor level in its entirety and can essentially be raised or lowered to the desired height and then fixed into position through the sides of the steel framing. This framework is most commonly used on floors that have already been finished, prior to installation of the glass.

We currently offer 3 different thicknesses of walk on glass for use in our well covers; 25.5mm, 31.5mm and 33mm thick, all of which are toughened and laminated safety glass. The thickness chosen will depend on the size / span of the glass and the application in which it is being used.

Additional glass options include :

Non slip chemical coating- Used to make the top surface of the glass anti-slip. Glass is of course inherently slippery as a polished finish, so we always strongly recommend this treatment.

Ritec coating – Used to the underside of the glass, this coating works like a self cleaning product and will help with condensation run off (but does not prevent condensation forming). We always recommend that the well be vented as much as possible to maximise airflow, and reduce condensation.

Backpainted borders – Painted borders are applied to the edges of the walk on glass area, and used to conceal any tapes, gaskets or adhesives used to secure the glass in place and provide a high end finish.
