“A new walk-out balcony and staircase have just been completed for our private customer in Balham, London. The new steel and glass system replaces an old and tired timber construction and at the same time increases the usable external space by extending the patio area on the landing platform….”

Our client David got in touch to arrange for the replacement of an old wooden staircase and landing which was not in line with current building regulations for a modern, attractive replacement that would stand the test of time – and of course be accepted by building control. 

We liaised with David via our usual longer-distance approach which flowed as follows :

1. David supplied some pictures and very basic dimensions for us to assess
2. A quotation was provided by email, and accepted.
3. DioMet undertook a full site survey at the property
4. The balcony and staircase were designed in AutoCAD for client approval
5. Design approved, and then duly manufactured
6. Old staircase removed and new staircase installed

The design chosen was a galvanized and powdercoated steel staircase with checkerplate treads, leading to a walk out balcony platform with composite decking boards. The balustrade to all areas was our side-mounted stainless steel and glass design; System 1.

It may sound uneconomical for DioMet Fabrications Ltd (a Sheffield based company) to complete a full service including survey and installation of this balcony and staircase in London however we very often find that we remain exceptionally competitive when compared to local labour.  Despite a long travel distance from Sheffield, the installation was completed over 3 days including travel time and removal of the existing stair.

All staircases, balcony systems and glass balustrades are designed to meet all current building regulations and supplied with a Declaration of Performance to BS EN 1090-2 as is legally required (and of course there are many rogue traders to watch out for who do not meet this compliance level)
