Hinged Glass Wine Cellar Door (Streamline Handle)
A walk-on glass floor hatch that opens on gas struts to reach the cellar, basement or storage below. This version uses a flush, streamlined lifting handle in place of the usual industrial pull ring, so the floor stays clean to look at and clear underfoot. It is part of our wine cellar glass door range, made to order in our Sheffield workshop.
Made to order, to fit your opening
Each hinged floor is made to measure for your floor recess. A structural walk-on glass panel is sealed into a powder-coated steel frame with gas-strut hinges that give an assisted, easy lift and a slow, safe close. The frame overlaps the opening on all sides, so it is self-supporting and has built-in tolerance for a clean fit. The sizes you give us should be the exact size of the floor recess; we then send you a drawing from your measurements to approve before anything is made.
Lead time is usually 6 to 10 weeks from drawing approval, with economy and express options. If you need one sooner, see our stock hinged glass floors for immediate availability, or step up to a fully electric, motorised hinged floor for hands-free opening.
Dimensions
- Length: hinged (longer) side, up to 2000mm
- Height: non-hinged (shorter) side, up to 1000mm
Supplied as one ready-to-install unit
Your hinged floor arrives as a single, fully assembled unit, not a kit of parts. The glass comes already sealed into the frame, with the gas-strut hinges, lifting handle and lock all fitted, finished and ready to set straight into your prepared opening. Every unit includes:
- 25.5mm toughened and laminated structural glass panel, sealed into the frame
- Powder-coated black steel framework with hinged, gas-strut opening mechanism
- Black steel framing with back-painted black glass borders (other colours on request)
- Streamlined flush lifting handle, factory-fitted
- Discreet lock with star keys for security
- Optional non-slip treatment, invisible to the eye and lasting around five years
Non-slip you can rely on
Our optional non-slip treatment reaches a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) of 68, well above the 36 normally needed to count as low slip risk in dry conditions. It is a chemical treatment, so there is nothing visible on the glass. There is more on this in our glass floor safety and anti-slip guide, and our walk-on glass care guide covers keeping it clear over time.
Where these are used
Our hinged walk-on glass trap doors suit basement and cellar access, wine stores and storage display units. They are not designed as the primary access to a habitable room, so please consider the use and manage the risk accordingly. The frames are not watertight nor fire-rated and are for internal, dry areas only.
Certifications and standards
Our steel frameworks are fully UKCA certified to BS EN 1090-2, a legal requirement that not every supplier meets. The glass is designed to a uniform distributed load of 1.5kN/sqm and a concentrated load of 2.0kN, the domestic (Category A) floor loadings given in the UK National Annex to BS EN 1991-1-1:2002, and these hinged floors are structurally approved for domestic use. Required glass thickness can vary with size, location, building use and support, so if in doubt consult a structural glass engineer; it remains the customer's responsibility to meet their own building control requirements. There is full detail in our glass floor building regulations guide.
